Stink Bug and Overwintering Pest Exclusion

Exclusion fits when the bugs are outside and haven't moved in yet. From late September into the third week of October, brown marmorated stink bugs stage on the warm south and west walls of Glen Burnie homes, then walk — they rarely fly directly into a gap — until they find a seam. In Tanyard Springs and other newer vinyl-sided sections, the openings are almost always the same three: unsealed J-channel returns around windows, the gap behind loose corner posts, and unscreened gable vents. In the 1940s and 50s Cape Cods around Harundale, Ferndale and Furnace Branch, it's dried-out glazing on wood window frames, worn weatherstripping on the storm door, and the knee-wall attic access. Homes backing the tree lines near Sawmill Creek Park, Glen Burnie Park and the northern end of the Baltimore & Annapolis Trail get heavier pressure, because mature hardwood and ornamental edges are where these bugs feed all summer before they look for a place to overwinter.

The alternative most companies sell is a fall perimeter barrier — a residual product banded on siding, eaves and around windows in late September. That has a real place: it knocks down bugs crawling across treated surfaces during the peak movement window. But it does not close a hole, and sun and rain wear it down within weeks. Exclusion is the only part of fall pest work that keeps paying you back in year two and year three. The honest trade-off is cost and labor: sealing a two-story house is ladder time, and it can't remove insects already tucked into a wall void or attic. If it is January in Cromwell or Sunset Knoll and stink bugs are waking up on your living room ceiling on a warm day, sealing the exterior will not stop this winter's emergence — vacuum them, empty the canister outside, and put the exclusion work on the calendar for September. Do not spray into wall voids; dead insects accumulating inside walls become food for carpet beetles.

Some of this you should do yourself, free. Replace torn window screens. Screen the dryer vent flap so it closes fully. Add a $12 door sweep where you can see daylight under the door. Check that the crawlspace or basement window wells aren't holding leaf litter — camel crickets in Point Pleasant, Marley Neck, Solley and Freetown basements are a moisture and debris problem first, an insect problem second.
